What Sophie Wants
A short film written by sisters Sophie & Emily. The film was entered into film festivals and shortlisted at: ‘The New Renaissance’, ‘Super Duper Diversity Film Festival’, ‘CBFF’ and ‘LA1 Shorts’.
The film is based on a real-life conversation the pair had when they were teenagers. With Sophie determined to explore a more mature, sexual identity that breaks away from only being seen as “adorable”. The film highlights the influence Emily has on Sophie expressing her sexuality. In the film we see Sophie trying on Emily’s lacey underwear and taking photographs for her boyfriend. When Emily walks in on her, she is naturally shocked and scared and reacts by telling Sophie off. Sophie responds as any typical teenager would: “Well, you do it, and they do it in Sex and the City and Hollyoaks!” Since then, Emily has supported and encouraged her sister to express her sexuality and be happy!
Created on a zero budget, What Sophie Wants’ was filmed in one single day with ‘Bloody Bandit Productions’ based in Manchester. Emily knew the two Sams who run ‘Bloody Bandit Productions’, and the two directors have known Sophie for a long time. So, the experience was handled with sensitivity and compassion, at the same time as being lots of fun for everyone involved.
Emily asked Sophie how she would feel if they were to make a film based on a real-life, historical conversation they had when they were younger. Emily reminded her sister of what was said, and Sophie remembered the conversation which was then transcribed from the time. They rehearsed this only a few times as they wanted it to be as authentic and as real as possible.
